How to Care for Your Skin (and Scruff) Like Liam Hemsworth

The highly-anticipated sequel to Independence Day: Resurgence opened over the weekend. Liam Hemsworth was just a kid when the original movie hit theatres 20 years ago, but now he’s all grown up and playing fighter pilot Jake Morrison.

While it may be a little early to forecast an Oscar, I’m pretty confident he’ll be in the running for at least one award. Yes, you heard it heard it here first: Liam Hemsworth for Best Five O’Clock Shadow, Stubble, Man Scruff or whatever you want to call it.

Liam’s impeccable stubble currently has women around the world swooning and men attempting to pull off this seemingly effortless look. Sure. Genetics that make you look like, well… a Hollywood movie star help. But there’s also some science behind this scruff phenomenon. Scientific studies have proven that stubble raises your attraction quotient.

So just how do you pull off this look? It takes some work, but I’ve broken into three simple steps.

3 STEPS TO GROWING AND MAINTAINING PERFECT SCRUFF

Swoon-worthy stubble didn’t just appear overnight for Liam. There is some maintenance involved. Luckily, compared to shaving, the time you’ll save maintaining stubble feels like Independence Day.

Like Liam, you’ll want to start with a good skin care and then regularly shape the stubble for a cleaner look.

  1. Exfoliate. Start with a good cleanse. A salicylic acid-based cleanser will help kick start exfoliation. Follow it up with a facial scrub to dissolve dead skin cells for a buffed, refined finish. A scrub containing dragon’s blood will sound like it’s equipping you to save the world from destruction, but it’s actually a tree resin and it heals the skin – reducing irritation, swelling and discomfort. Lastly, exfoliating with a scrub will provide a smoother shave for the areas that still need to be shaved.
  2. Keep it hydrated. Apply a good shave oil containing antioxidants for an added skin boost. This can be used during the shave – allow it to sit for 30 seconds. This will give your beard a chance to soften. Or it can be used after to keep your five o’clock shadow hydrated and maintained.
  3. Shaping. Use a razor or trimmer to shave carefully in the direction of the hair growth. Caution: Don’t remove too much scruff. You’ll look like a B-lister.

Maintenance. What is the secret to keeping scruff at a perfect stubble length like Liam’s? Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Every couple of days or so, you’ll want to use a stubble trimmer with an adjustable cutting guide. Guys with less stubble can sometimes go a week. Now that’s what I call independence!
